First Time Setup Guide

Complete walkthrough to set up your Thox.ai device from unboxing to first use.

Back to Articles

This guide walks you through setting up your Thox.ai device for the first time. The process takes about 10-15 minutes. By the end, you'll have your device connected and ready to use with your development environment.

1

Unbox your device

Carefully open the packaging and verify all contents are present:

  • Thox.ai device
  • 65W USB-C power adapter
  • 1m Ethernet cable
  • Quick Start Guide
  • Warranty card

Inspect the device for any shipping damage. The aluminum enclosure should be free of dents or scratches. Check all ports (USB-C power, Ethernet, USB-A) are clear.

2

Choose a location

Select an appropriate location for your device:

  • Flat, stable surface (desk, shelf, or rack)
  • Good ventilation - at least 2 inches clearance on all sides
  • Away from direct sunlight and heat sources
  • Near your router for Ethernet connection (recommended)
  • Accessible power outlet

Avoid

Do not place the device in enclosed spaces like cabinets, on soft surfaces like carpet or beds, or stacked under other equipment.

3

Connect power

Connect the included 65W USB-C power adapter:

  • Plug the USB-C end into the power port on the device
  • Connect the adapter to a wall outlet
  • The LED should light up within a few seconds

Power requirements

The device requires USB-C Power Delivery (PD) with 45-65W output. The included adapter is 65W. Third-party adapters meeting these specs will work, but the included adapter is recommended for best compatibility.

4

Connect to network

For initial setup, we recommend using Ethernet:

  • Connect the included Ethernet cable to the device
  • Connect the other end to your router or network switch
  • The device will automatically obtain an IP address via DHCP

Wi-Fi (optional)

Wi-Fi can be configured after initial setup through the web interface or CLI. Ethernet is recommended for best performance and reliability.

5

Wait for boot sequence

The LED indicates boot progress:

  • White pulsing - Starting up
  • Yellow - Initializing system
  • Blue - Configuring network
  • Green solid - Ready to use

First boot takes 60-90 seconds. Subsequent boots are faster (30-45 seconds).

6

Access the web interface

Once the LED is solid green, access the web interface:

  • Open your browser
  • Navigate to http://thox.local:8080
  • If that doesn't work, check your router for the device IP
  • Log in with default credentials: admin / admin
  • You'll be prompted to change the password on first login

Important Tips

Register your device

Visit thox.ai/register with your serial number (on device bottom) to activate warranty and receive firmware updates.
